🏄 Isabel Letham
Isabel Letham grew up at Freshwater, where the beach encouraged an early love of bodysurfing. In 1915 she joined visiting Hawaiian champion Duke Kahanamoku in a surfboard demonstration that became a celebrated moment in Australian surfing history. Her life also included swimming instruction in the United States and, after returning, teaching around Sydney's northern suburbs. She promoted synchronised swimming and encouraged women to take their place in surfing. Letham continued living at the Freshwater family home and surfed into her seventies. Her ashes were scattered off Manly and Freshwater, completing a lifetime's connection with these beaches.
📚 Dorothea Mackellar
Dorothea Mackellar was born at Dunara in Point Piper in 1885, a harbour-side beginning for the writer most strongly associated with My Country. Educated at home, she learned several languages and travelled widely with her family, moving between Sydney society, rural properties and life overseas. Those experiences complicate the familiar image of a poet who belonged only to the bush. The landscape poem grew from a life that included both country and city, travel and attachment to home. A blue plaque at Dunara commemorates the eastern Sydney residence at the beginning of that literary story.
🎵 Dame Joan Sutherland
Joan Sutherland was born at her family's Point Piper home in 1926 and lived at Clyde Cottage in Woollahra from 1932 until 1951. Those eastern Sydney years preceded the international opera career that earned her the name La Stupenda. Her voice combined unusual power, agility and beauty, sustaining a career admired by audiences and fellow musicians. A council plaque outside the Queen Street cottage marks the childhood home. The harbour-side birthplace and later family residence provide precise local settings for the early life of a singer whose subsequent performances belonged to stages around the world.
